- December 22, 2009
Visit to Senior Citizen Nursing Home - The Good Samaritan Nursing Home has requested that we sponsor a day with the residents at their facility on December 22, 2009 @ 10:00 am. They are located at 6400 Haynes Blvd. The committee is soliciting brothers to participate in this year's social action Christmas event. We are asking brothers, who can commit to be available to assist with singing Christmas songs to the residents, pass out gift bags, socialize with the residents and add all around holiday cheer. We have asked the Sigma Beta's to assist with the entertainment by stepping for the residents as well as bro. White's Karate Club and any Collegiate brothers still in town.

Children's Hospital Christmas Toy Drive - We have been requested to participate in the Children's Hospital Toy and Doll drive with the Zeta's. It is 19-Dec-09 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church 851 Kleber St. Mandeville, LA beginning at 9:00am.  Families will be coming there to pick-up toys and they will need a lot of man (and woman) power to assist in distributing the toys.

March for Babies Celebration 2009 Recognition Party
- In an effort to commence participation in the 2010 "Walk for Babies" and to recognize teams for their 2009 participation, the New Orleans Chapter of March for Babies is hosting its recognition party at the East Jefferson Hospital Conference Center, Room - Esplanade 3, 4200 Houma Blvd, Metairie, LA 70006. The time is from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. Food and prizes are part of the event. This is a national partnership and our chapter of Theta Beta Sigma plans to be represented. Sigma/Zeta Round-Up on November 2, 2009. It's a Monday Night Football event (New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons) with complimentary food and a cash bar. The Round-Up will be at AllSports, 10711 Chef Menteur Highway, starting at 7:00pm. Please mark your calendar for Monday, November 2, 2009 and come out to enjoy some Sigma/Zeta fellowship.

The volunteer day is officially set for our Habitat for Humanity house that Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity sponsored ($85K) during the 2009 Conclave. The day is Saturday, October 17th, @ 7:45am and the build site is 2422 Clouet St, in the 9th ward. This event will also include photo ops and possible accompanying interviews. All chapters of the city are invited to attend. We hope to see you represented- family and friends are welcome. This will be showing our Fraternity at its best with an opportunity for all to see! Once again, Theta Beta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. will have a presence at the annual UNCF "Walk for Education" which will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Audubon Park Riverview area. Their goal this year is to raise $200,000 which they will accomplish with our help. Please mark your calendar for Sunday, October 11, 2009. The Registration fee of $25 ends on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 ($30 thereafter).

Our monthly Grad chapter meeting will be held on September 12th, 2009. It will be held on the University of New Orleans campus in the Kirschman Hall Business Building, Room #122 @ 7:00pm. Also, the annual Membership Intake (MIP) Certification class will be held at the same place, starting at 4:00pm. All brothers wishing to become intake certified are welcome to attend. It is MANDATORY for all undergraduate members, especially the chapter presidents, to attend. Please bring a notepad and folder to retrieve pertinent information during the Intake class. Any Brother having already attended the Intake Certification class, either at this past Regional Conference, or Conclave, does not have to attend.

Filmed on location in the small city of Baker, Louisiana, Renaissance Village follows the personal struggles of five characters to reclaim their lives after living nearly three years in a FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) trailer park. Relay For Life: University of New Orleans at Lakefront Arena (Arena South Grounds). This is one of our fraternities' national initiatives. Relay For Life is about celebration, remembrance, and hope. By participating, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight it all right here in our community. Event Date and Time May 30, 2009 3:00 PM - 3:00 AM. You can join for as little as $10 (you can give more). There will be entertainment and the Sigma Beta's will perform. Community Grant Writing Seminar at Dillard University

Bro. Paul L. Griffin, Jr., the International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc, will be representing the Fraternity at the Saturday, March 21st press conference at 10:00 AM to deliver a check in the amount of $85,000 to the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, at 4001 Roman Street, in New Orleans. Present with him will be members of the International Board of the fraternity, the Gulf Coast Region, and members of the local chapter, as well as members of collegiate chapters from Dillard, SUNO, UNO, Loyola, Tulane, Nichols State, and Xavier. Also in attendance will be local business and governmental leaders that are members of Phi Beta Sigma; including the following: Alden McDonald - President of Liberty Bank & Trust; Preston Edwards - Founder, Black Collegiate Magazine; and Warren Riley - Superintendent, New Orleans Police Department.

The Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus will be sponsoring a conference on the State of Blacks in Louisiana in Baton Rouge. The keynote speaker will be Marc Morial, Executive Director of the National Urban League. The conference will review the State of Blacks in Louisiana report that will be published in March. The conference will give those interested in policy development and who work to improve the status of Blacks in our community with empirical data and best practices to help address those problems, to meet with other similar minded organizations, and interact with members of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus. Any Brothers that are financial and are interested in joining Bro. Christopher Cockrell as our representative should forward to caucusb@legis.state.la.us the name of our organization (Phi Beta Sigma), your name, phone, mailing address and e-mail address. Seating will be limited and there will be a fee to cover lunch. Our organization will be put on a list to receive the Save the Date card and registration information regarding the event.

Help rebuild New Orleans -- Sign up to help with a one-day construction project to benefit children and families of the Crescent City. Operation REACH, Inc., a national nonprofit born and based in New Orleans, the Knowledge Garden Child Development Center, The Chrysler Foundation and the KaBoom! playground project are seeking 250 volunteers to help out with this unique and exciting project. Students, private companies and corporations, service groups and anyone interested in helping out are welcome and encouraged to register. Announcements

- Theta Beta Sigma will be holding a Financial Literacy Workshop using Money Smart, a training program created by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) to help adults outside the financial mainstream enhance their money skills and create positive banking relationships. Details about the program and the course modules can be found here.

Since Theta Beta Sigma will be instructing others on the course material just learned, Money Smart also offers a Train-the-Trainer program that is designed for those who are interested in teaching financial education to others and viewable online. Refer to following link for more details.

Brother's even though we've already run (or walked ) the race it's not too late to contribute to our chapter's efforts to support the mission of the United Negro College Fund. Our chapter (Theta Beta Sigma) of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. participated with about 12 Brothers and team members in the 2008 UNCF New Orleans 21st Annual Walk for Education benefiting The United Negro College Fund, its schools, and students.
