THETA BETA SIGMA CHAPTER, GULF COAST REGION

Programs & Partnerships

  • Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is a national organization headquartered in Washington D.C. that is divided into seven (7) regions within the United States. The Theta Beta Chapter is part of the Gulf Coast Region. The chapter has created a foundation entitled “THE THETA BETA SIGMA PROGRAMS AND HOUSING FOUNDATION”. The foundation is a tax-exempt 501 (c)3 legal entity of which every financially active member of our chapter belongs. The directors of the foundation come from the current and past officers of the chapter. The intent of the foundation is consistent with the goals and programs of the fraternity as a whole. This separate entity allows for organizations and individuals to receive tax credit for contributions to a charitable institution. Volunteer involvement of the foundation is reflected in the focus of the chapter and the fraternity as a whole. All of our activities are supported by the fraternal Brothers from the graduate chapter as well as Brothers from our collegiate chapters which are housed on each college campus in New Orleans area as well as surrounding colleges (SUNO, UNO, Dillard, Xavier University, Tulane, Loyola, & Nichols State).
  • Rebuilding Our Community New Orleans, a non-profit organization that promotes projects to improve the quality of life for the residents of the entire New Orleans Metropolitan Area. A recently successful Theta Beta Sigma project has been the remediation of homes to help in the New Orleans recovery effort.
  • Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO), a statewide network of non profits, foundations, corporations and individuals that server to strengthen, promote and build the capacity of Louisiana's nonprofit sector through education, advocacy and member services.
  • Conversation Among Brothers Series, a program of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in conjunction with the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Phi Beta Sigma, as a part of the Heightened National Response, is committed to the "ACT! Against AIDS" Leadership Mobilization Campaign. Under this Campaign, Sigma will work in concert with CDC and other CDC partners to A-C-T:
    • break the silence and increase Awareness of HIV/AIDS;
    • deliver Communication messages to African American populations; and
    • promote Testing that may lead to early detection and treatment of HIV/AIDS in the African American community.
Phi Beta Sigma is charged to engage local chapters in key urban cities to participate in planning of local town meetings and other activities consistent with the Heightened Response agenda. In the New Orleans area Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Dillard and Delta Eta Chapter of Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO) are charged with the effort of city-wide coordination. Click here for additional program information.
  • Sigma Beta Club, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.'s nationally sponsored youth mentoring program for males aged 8-18
  • Harrah's Foundation is prepared to receive grant proposals from community organizations. A synopsis of the guidelines is provided here. The request for proposal (RFP) doesn't have a deadline and will accept ideas for a variety of project types. A link within the synopsis will take you to the Harrah's Foundation website which provides more information on the grant requirements. If there are any Brothers that are doctors, Brothers that are educators, Brothers involved with youth groups, or Brothers with an idea that they'd like to see get funded--review the document (and Harrah Website) and let me (or Bro. Glenis Scott) know if you want to pursue.
  • Last year The GulfSouth Youth Action Corp (GYAC) evaluated our proposal for a grant to initiate a Sigma Beta Club in the New Orleans area. We just missed the award last year but have been invited to resubmit our proposal. Let’s be hopeful for the upcoming 2008/2009 funding period.
